Sometimes kids ask questions that are a little bit… hard to answer. Rather than get hung up on metaphors with birds, bees, and cabbage patches, Benny shows up on the scene to tell it straight, and answer the question: Where DO explainer videos come from???
I would like to give a huge thanks to my loving family for their massive contributions and support: my darling wife and youngest daughter for starring alongside our family friend Benny, and my oldest daughter for her behind-the-scenes contributions. She worked on set as our boom operator and drew all of the artwork for the video. She also served as the initial inspiration since she drew the storyboards for Benny’s explainer when she was only six years old. She wanted to help me work on a spot for Gerber Life Insurance at the time, and I finally got around to animating it (better late than never, right?). It’s easy to get caught up in this work and forget who you’re doing it for, so I wanted to show my appreciation by getting everyone involved.

Little Girl: “Mommy!”
Mother: “Yes, Dear?”
Little Girl: “Where do explainer videos come from?”
The mother is frozen in horror. She thought she had more time before having to answer this question. What can she say?
Benny: “My name is Benny, and I am FOUR YEARS OLD! And today I’m going to tell you where explainer videos come from. AH HA HA HA HA HA HA!”
Pre-Production
Every explainer video starts with an idea and that idea becomes the “script.” The script says everything that happens in the video. Explainer videos usually have three acts: the old story, the turn, and the new story.
I’m going to write my script right now! We see a baby in uh-a stroller, who is crying lots and lots… Next, I make some drawings of my-uh, characters, and uh, backgrounds… Oh yeah, that’s the stuff. Just like that!
Production
Once I have my characters made, I need to record the voice over, which is how people hear the story. Once the voice over is done, the REAL magic happens. That’s when I-uh, make all my drawings move in the compuuuuter. Then I bring in some music and PRESTO! It’s time to unveil our masterpiece to the world!
Sample Explainer Video Story
This is a baby. The baby is crying and crying a lot because-um, he wants some juice, but he can’t-uh, walk yet. What if there was some way, he could get juice without walking? Introducing Grandma! Grandma is your trusted source for getting juice, and then baby will stop crying and fall right asleep. Call Grandma today!
